About

Aoyama Meguro is pleased to present Chosil Kil’s first solo exhibition in Japan, Ring The Bell, opening Saturday 12th September.

Korean born artist Kil (1975-) graduated from the prestigious Royal College of Art, London. Since then, she has been based in London and worked in the artist collective ‘Janfamily'. Kil is considered to be one of the most promising young artists on the scene, participating in various successive exhibitions in Europe. Chosil Kil’s exhibition, Ring The Bell at Aoyama Meguro follows Kil's participation at this year’s ‘Platform Seoul 2009’, curated by Sunjung Kim.

Working predominately with sculpture, Kil often uses ready-made objects from her daily life. Though it starts with personal substance, by dissolving original meanings and rearranging the historical background of each object she depicts new perspectives that resonate with gallery visitors in a visually attractive way.

One of Kil’s works at this exhibition, Treated Objects, A half (2009), is paired with and coincides with the exhibition of her work, Treated Objects, Other half (2009) which will be shown at her solo exhibition The doorbell doesn’t work, please knock at the Galerie Opdahl, Berlin in two weeks. The intimate relation between the two works is revealed in the recently published book for both exhibitions.

Aoyama Meguro presents Kil’s nine latest pieces, including works made during Kil's stay in Tokyo last year and her personal item piece, Glasses, for which she will display her only pair of glasses during the exhibition.

We hope you enjoy Chosil Kil’s first solo exhibition in Japan.
